At home with Zozo ..

My name is Zozo, those who are close to me call me Zo

I am a Jo´burger at heart and it also shows in how I move through life, with optimism, vibe, energy and smile but that can also turn into something else should the situations require. Jo´burg has shaped me in who I am and what I have become and the many projects I have created and have been part. I am go getter! I think of something, I do it. No matter if I succeed or not.

I am based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I am mother with a big M. Love my children

I am also a multi hyphenated being. I am forever a dancer, preforming artist, runner. I am also yoga teacher, dance teacher, photographer, story teller.I am a lover of the performative arts, beautiful spaces, experiences and people.

I founded My Beautiful People - a visual , story telling space that was about the celebration of  black beauty and questioning the monolithic narrative of black people through Photography.

I also founded a running group here in Copenhagen, for black and brown people as a safe space for wellness, healing and gathering. A space that helped us heal colletivelly in the aftermath of Corona and the lockdowns.

I am currently on my third journey with Zozo Wellness, a space where I invite those who needs wellness and wellbeing to access by leading by example, moving my body and being unapologetic about it.

When do I feel at home?

Home for me has changed meaning throughout my time. Prior living in Denmark , home was South Africa, the sunset, the people, of Soweto, the laughter of  the women in my family, the dance, music and singing.

Then now after living in Denmark for more than 26 years,  home is about feeling safe, loved and where I have a sense of belonging. I feel most at home when I am in my house, with my children, listening to music, cooking, celebrating  a birthday celebration with friends and family.

I also feel at home when I am resting on my couch, reading a book or simply talking to my South African friend on the phone, having hearty conversation with lots of belly laughter in my mother tongue, Zulu.

Karen Mukupa in The House!

Karen Mukupa in the house!

When Karen let me into her beautiful colourful home in Islands Brygge, it was like time stopped. So many stories and so many life experiences lived coming through every corner and every surface of her apartment.

In this photo story I will show you some of the many pictures we took that day just playing around. There was no purpose to it, but just having fun on a grey day in Copenhagen.

What does home mean to you?

“Home to me is not just a physical space or a building divided into squares and rooms. It’s a place where I feel secure, loved, and accepted for who I am. Home symbolizes love, family, a place of belonging, and a deep sense of safety. It’s the one place where I can be vulnerable, share both the difficult and joyful moments of life, and know that I’ll always have the support from those I love. Home is my “safe space” – a sanctuary that protects me from the challenges of the outside world. It’s a place where my family and I create memories, share our life’s and build a foundation for our future."

“Having grown up in different cultures and countries, I’ve come to realize that home also isn’t tied to one place. Home is wherever I am, wherever I feel comfortable, and wherever I’m surrounded by people I care for. It’s taught me that home doesn’t have to be flawless or fixed -  it just needs to be a space where I can be myself, knowing I’m loved exactly as I am, simply for being me.”
